Mobile App Redesign - iOS

Role

UX Designer

Project Scope

Redesign the current LA Fitness Gym mobile app to provide improved UX and UI, for ease of functionality, providing greater value and experience to the users and brand.

The Challenge

Fitness is an important part of my life. I enjoy exercising as much as I do learning design. So when I first noticed how dated and clunky the LA Fitness mobile app was, a lightbulb lit in my head with a voice telling me REDESIGN THIS!

I immediately checked Apple's App Store to see if other users shared my feelings.
The answer was a resounding yes:

With over 2.5k ratings and an overall 2.2 out of 5 stars, I read many reviews that were heavily disappointed in the overall layout, design and navigation of the app. Seeing the potential improvements that could be made, I decided to challenge myself and redesign the app!

App Analysis

First, I conducted an in-depth analysis of the application, as it exists currently to users. This analysis aimed to identify areas for improvement and opportunities to enhance the overall user experience.

The examination encompassed a comprehensive evaluation of the app's current features, user interfaces, and usability. Several key issues emerged during this process:

Navigation Complexity:
The existing app displayed a degree of navigational complexity, making it challenging for users to locate essential features and information.

Limited Exercise Variety:
Users reported difficulties in finding diverse workout routines and exercises, which hindered their ability to personalize their fitness journeys.

Booking and Scheduling Issues:
Some users faced challenges when attempting to book classes or schedule workouts, which impacted their ability to engage with the gym's services seamlessly.

Motivational Elements:
The app lacked certain motivational elements that could encourage users to stay consistent with their fitness routines and achieve their goals.

Client-Trainer Interaction:
Trainers highlighted issues related to client management and real-time tracking capabilities, hindering their ability to provide effective guidance and support.

This app analysis phase served as a foundational step in understanding the app's strengths and weaknesses. By identifying these key areas of improvement, I aimed to address these issues through the redesign process, ultimately creating a more user-friendly and engaging LA Fitness app.

Research

To better understand the diverse needs and pain points of LA Fitness app users, I conducted extensive user research, engaging with three key user personas:

Persona 1: Fitness Trainer - Alex
Age: 32
Occupation: Certified Personal Trainer
Goals: Creating and managing customized workout plans for clients, tracking client progress, and scheduling training sessions.
Pain Points: Cumbersome client management, limited exercise variety, and lack of real-time tracking for clients.

Persona 2: Gym Member - Sarah
Age: 28
Occupation: Marketing Specialist
Goals: Consistently working out to maintain overall fitness, tracking progress, and accessing class schedules.
Pain Points: Clunky navigation, difficulty finding suitable workout routines, and challenges with class booking.

Persona 3: Client - Emily
Age: 24
Occupation: Recent College Graduate
Goals: Weight loss and improved fitness, following personalized workout plans created by her trainer.
Pain Points: Navigational issues, lack of motivation, and the need for clear guidance within the app.

These three personas represent the primary user groups interacting with the LA Fitness app—trainers, clients, and gym members. They each have distinct roles, goals, and challenges related to the app. By taking into account their specific needs and pain points, I aimed to create a more inclusive and user-centric LA Fitness app.

Wireframes: Low-Fi Prototype

I created low-fidelity wireframes using Adobe XD to lay the foundation for the redesigned LA Fitness app. These wireframes allowed me to quickly visualize and simplify user interactions and navigation. I also used them to gather valuable feedback from colleagues and potential users, which guided subsequent design decisions.

Redesign: Hi-Fi Prototype

In this phase, I transformed user insights and low-fidelity wireframes into a polished high-fidelity prototype. My goal was to create a visually appealing and user-friendly design, aligning with LA Fitness's commitment to modernity and addressing user pain points. The prototype showcases intuitive navigation, updated aesthetics, and improved usability.

I meticulously refined each screen, from the home page to check-in, ensuring clarity and engagement. Usability tests and user feedback were invaluable in guiding my design decisions, ultimately leading to an enhanced user experience and a smoother fitness journey.
